I am not sure what model Roadmaster tow bar you had attached to your motorhome, but those with a folding design like what you described will use a built-in storage latch to secure it in the folding position. When in this position, there should be no issues with it coming unattached while driving. It's possible that the latching mechanism on your particular unit was damaged or faulty, as this is not a common issue.

It's pretty awesome you have one of the rare Jeep LJ's and I know there are many envious Jeep enthusiasts out there. One of the biggest things to keep the tow bar in the best shape is to keep the tow bar covered when not in use, on or off of the towing vehicle. This will cut down on the dirt build up on the legs and joints of the tow bar. A # BX8875 tow bar cover is recommended.

With a tow bar such as # 63180 you will have to have the toad lined up straight behind the RV to even attach it to the brackets on the toad. So the process of actually connecting the vehicle to the RV ensures that it is lined up straight.

The handles, or Freedom Latch, of the Roadmaster Sterling All-Terrain Tow Bar # RM-576 lock down as you are driving away after connecting the tow bar. As you can see by the accompanying cut out of the instructions the Sterling's arms will extend, self-center and lock when you do this.
To unlock them when you want to disconnect, just lift the latches and this will unlock the tow bar's arms.

Safety chains don't normally attach to tow bars. They normally attach to the safety chain loops of the tow vehicle and then to the base plate kit or frame of the vehicle that is being flat towed. That way if the tow bar some how gets disconnected the chains are still attached to the vehicle and RV.

The arms of the Demco Commander tow bar DM9511010 connect to the towed car with the upper bar to the passenger side. This keeps the arms' release triggers protected on the inside of the arms.

Yes, you are correct. Item # RM-524447-4 does require an external crossbar on your 2017 Lincoln MKX, which comes with certain compatible tow bars like Item # RM-522. The crossbar in some ways can be easier to use because you pull a clip from each side and the crossbar stays connected to the tow bar. The Curt Tow Bar with Adjustable-Width Arms # C19745 is a universal tow bar system and the instructions basically say to make sure to attach the clevis mounts to the frame of the vehicle.
